Welcome to MacDonald’s Tax Blog

My name is Norman MacDonald. I’m a Canadian lawyer specializing in tax and customs litigation / dispute resolution, as well as asset protection, for Canadian and ex-pat taxpayers. A few years ago, I was asked to write a book on how to do tax appeals, survive tax audits, and generally how to resolve tax disputes with the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and other taxing authorities. I didn’t have the time to devote to writing a book back then, because I was too busy fighting the tax man on behalf of real taxpayers, and there were already self-help books out there that walked taxpayers through the process. But just writing a book telling people about the process is not as interesting, for me at least, or for the potential reader, than writing and reading about actual fact situations that I’ve worked on, and which may be relevant to the reader’s specific circumstances. So I started a blog back then to describe my experiences and report on different decisions that have come out in the tax and business world.

I moved to Bermuda in 2014, and took a six year hiatus from Canada to work for the Bermuda Government where I served as Senior Crown Attorney, and as acting Solicitor-General of Bermuda, doing among other things, tax and customs litigation on behalf of the Government. I didn’t have time to keep the blog going, so I closed it down, until I returned to Canada and would be able to devote some time to it. I’m back now. I’ve started this blog to pick up where I left off, reporting on tax and business issues, asset protection, and related topics.

I hope you find it informative and I invite comments and questions. I’ll be posting new material every Thursday(ish) so check back often or hit the subscribe button above to receive regular updates as they are posted.
